Amethyst Jewellery : birthstone for February
Amethyst jewellery varies in colour from pale lilac to deep purple and is said to be the colour of Royalty. It is the stone of St Valentine. This popular gemstone is given by lovers as it is said to encourages faithfulness. In addition is was worn by early Greeks who believed it protected against intoxication. (The name is derived from amethustos meaning non-enebriated.) The first Christians also valued the gemstone. Bishops frequently wore a ring made from amethyst.
